And do not approach immoralities—what is apparent of them and what is concealed.
My pure brothers, the concept of this passage from the noble verse transcends the mere traditional abstention from committing sin; rather, it extends to the creation of an active, preventative movement in the life of the individual and society to prevent falling into it in the first place.
The Active Confrontation of the Apparent and the Concealed
What is apparent of them (the external movement): This aspect requires a societal and institutional movement (enjoining good and forbidding evil, enacting laws, a clean environment) to remove immoral manifestations from the public sphere. It is a movement of societal reform and public purification.
What is concealed of them (the internal movement): This requires a continuous inner movement within the soul (struggling against the self, heart purification, monitoring thoughts and intentions). The dynamism here is "self-striving" to prevent deviant feelings and thoughts from settling and turning into actions.
{...This has He instructed you that you may use reason.}
May Allah make us and you among those who reason regarding what He has instructed us with.
May you and your pure souls be well.
Blessed Friday
